After ejecting five players, Mozambique league champions UD Songo have embarked on a mass recruitment targeting Senegal, the home of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions.
As they eye participation in the 2026-27 edition of the CAF Champions League, the Tete-based team is strengthening with experienced, tall and athletic players who can withstand the heat.
Future options:
Looking ahead, Mozambique FA (FMF) must also be proactive and professional with the approach of emerging dual national talents, such as: Álex Pérez 🇪🇸🇲🇿 (Real Betis/Torino), Chissumba 🇵🇹🇲🇿 (Braga/Alverca), Rayhan Momade 🇵🇹🇲🇿 (Sporting CP) and Saibo Ibraimo 🇩🇪🇲🇿. pic.twitter.com/bVhuJTaOly— Moçambicanizando 🇲🇿 (@MozFooty) December 16, 2025
This represents a shift in Songo’s recruitment policy. Previously, the electricity men used to scout for talent in neighbouring countries such as Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi.
However, coach Dude Razaque wants footballers who are stronger mentally and physically.
Little wonder, the coach has invaded the top-flight league of Senegal, the AFCON kings, hoping to unearth the next Sadio Mane.
In a statement, Songo confirmed the signing of Senegalese winger Johnson Mohamed, striker Christian Gomes and midfielder Mame Gueye.
The Mozambican champions lauded Gueye, who stands at 1.84m, for his ‘strength, playing vision, technical ability and decisive passes.’
On the other hand, the club says right-winger Mohamed (1.80m) possesses ‘speed, technique and boldness to fire up attack.’
What qualities are the Mozambican champions looking for in new recruits?
Standing at 1.85m, Gomes has also come with a big reputation as a top centre-forward blessed with ‘strength, presence and goal beacon to strengthen our attack!’
Apart from the three footballers from Senegal, Songo have signed Mozambican striker Ling and goalkeeper Fazito.
The new arrivals have replaced the players which Tete-based club released recently, including Malawian striker Richard Mbulu, Mozambican forward Lau King, defender Daniel Mutambe, winger Nelson Divrassone, midfielder Shaquille and goalkeeper Julius Franque.
Razaque-led club won the 2025 Moçambola league title with three games to spare after the Mozambique Football League ended the season prematurely.
Mozambique league champions UD Songo have launched an ambitious recruitment drive in Senegal following the release of five players, signaling a strategic shift ahead of the 2026–27 CAF Champions League campaign.
The Tete-based club, fresh from clinching the 2025 Moçambola title with three games to spare, are aiming to strengthen their squad with physically imposing and mentally resilient footballers capable of competing at continental level.
The UD Songo Senegal recruitment strategy marks a clear departure from the club’s traditional scouting network. Previously, the “electricity men” focused on neighboring countries such as Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi to bolster their ranks.
However, head coach Dude Razaque believes competing in the CAF Champions League requires a higher level of physicality, discipline, and mental toughness.
Senegal, home to the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions, has become the primary target market. The country’s domestic league is known for producing strong, athletic players capable of adapting to demanding environments — qualities Razaque wants embedded in his squad.
As part of the UD Songo Senegal recruitment strategy, the club confirmed the arrival of three Senegalese players:
Johnson Mohamed (Winger)
Christian Gomes (Striker)
Mame Gueye (Midfielder)
The club praised Mame Gueye, who stands at 1.84 meters, highlighting his “strength, vision, technical ability, and decisive passing.”
Right-winger Johnson Mohamed (1.80m) was described as possessing “speed, technique, and boldness to fire up the attack,” while striker Christian Gomes (1.85m) arrives with a strong reputation as a center-forward blessed with “presence, strength, and a keen eye for goal.”
The trio’s physical profiles underline the club’s emphasis on height, athleticism, and aerial dominance — crucial attributes for continental competition.
