Stellenbosch FC showed their highest level on Saturday, scoring twice in the first half to down Sekhukhune United by a 2-0 score in the first leg from the second MTN 8 semifinal clash of the day.
Nigerian fullback Enyinnaya Godswill opened the scoring with his first goal in South African football on an assist from Lesiba Nku. Nku then produced a sensational pass to set up Stellies captain Devin Titus to double the advantage by halftime.
Sekhukhune were not completely outmatched. In a frustrating first half, it seemed like Eric Tinkler’s side just failed to bring their shooting boots to test Stellies goalkeeper Sage Stephens. Titus’ goal came after a couple of excellent opportunities for visitors Sekhukhune, who still have some hope for the return leg at home next week.
Fortunately for Sekhukhune, the intensity died down in the second half so that they could remain in contention by avoiding a lopsided defeat.
The second leg will take place in Polokwane at the Peter Mokaba Stadium with both teams having midweek league fixtures in the meantime. Stellenbosch travel to face Orlando Pirates on Wednesday while Sekhukhune play away at Betway Premiership newcomers Orbit College on Tuesday.
