Asante Kotoko striker Kwame Opoku says the club needed to win the FA Cup to avoid finishing the 2024/25 football season without silverware.
Opoku scored twice – one from a header plus an 86th minute penalty as the Porcupine Warriors defeated Division One club, Golden Kicks SC to win the 2025 MTN FA Cup at the Legon Sports Stadium on Sunday June 15.
Kotoko missed out on the league title, finishing third on the league table with 58 points, same as rivals Hearts of Oak after 34 matches.
Kwame Opoku said: “I will give thanks to almighty God for winning this trophy. I’m very happy as a player [and] for my team because we can’t go trophyless this season for all of the work that we have put in so I’m very happy today.
“Asante Kotoko can’t go trophyless, we were supposed to win the league but unfortunately we could not win, and I was supposed to do something for my club so I’m happy we won the FA Cup so I can say we did well this season.”
The FA Cup glory is the club’s 10th title, two behind record holders Hearts of Oak. By winning this title, Asante Kotoko earns a spot in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup – a competition they are yet to win.
