Zimbabwean player Marshall Munetsi revealed his delight after opening his goal account for Wolves in a 1-1 Premier League draw against Everton under the Molineux lights on Sunday.
The 28-year-old, who joined Wolves from French Ligue 1 side Reims on February 3, 2025, became the first Zimbabwean since Benjani in January 2011 to score in a Premier League game, helping to secure what could be a crucial point for the Old Gold in their battle against the drop.
“It feels good. It's been coming and I think in the last couple of games I had chances to score, but obviously in football you can never predict when you're going to score,” Munetsi told Wolves website when asked how he felt to open his goal account.
“But I think the coach and the players have always had that faith in me to keep on pushing and scoring. Benjani was a pivotal player for us in Zimbabwe and, historically, he paved the way for us Zimbabweans.”
On the battling draw against the Toffees, he said: “I think it's something that we're pushing for. Obviously, we wanted the win today, but Everton has been a team that has been in form, but we really pushed until the last minute.
“Obviously, we couldn't get the three points, but it's not over yet. We have to go again against Southampton before the International break, so I think we just have to keep on pushing and working.”
Munetsi continued: “We have a lot of quality in the team and if the coach asks me to play in a certain role with the tactics that we had, if we want to press from the front – this is something that he was asked for us – to put more pressure on the defence I'm able to do that.
“It's something that we always try to work on and playing as a striker, playing on the wing, or playing as a midfielder, for me, it's not a problem, as long as I'm able to help the team.”
Munetsi made his debut for Wolves on February 9 in a 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup.
