Mutapa urges Zambia to create chances against Zimbabwe

Zambia national team assistant coach Oswald Mutapa has remained confident as the team prepares to face rivals Zimbabwe in the final of the Mukuru Four Nations Tournament at Obed Itani Chilume Stadium in Botswana, on Tuesday.

The Chipolopolo booked their place in the final after edging Malawi 9-8 in a dramatic penalty shootout, while Zimbabwe progressed with a comprehensive win over hosts Botswana.

Mutapa has another chance to test a developing squad assembled with long-term ambitions in mind which includes qualification for the 2030 FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.

Mutapa used the tournament to give exposure to emerging talent, and he is expected to rely on key attacking options of Eliya Mandanji, Derrick Bulaya and captain Abraham Siankombo. Nchanga Rangers forward Elliot Kampukesa is also in the fray.

Mutapa focus is to be more clincial

Speaking ahead of the final, Mutapa said: “We played a very tough game against an experienced side, but the boys showed courage and maintained structure. We created chances and could have won the game earlier. Going into this match, the focus is to be more clinical and take our chances.”

“If we are able to create chances, then it means we can score at any given time. The message to the players is to stay confident and take the opportunities.”

Between the sticks, Patrick Chooma is likely to be retained, with a defensive line expected to include Headson Paina, Jonathan Kalimina, Jackson Phiri and Kafunti Saisada. The midfield could again feature Dominic Kanda, Humphrey Bwembya, Francis Banda, Derrick Bulaya and Siankombo.

Other squad members available for selection include goalkeeper Luka Mainza along with Christo Chitambala, Kelvin Chipelu, Ronald Chileshe, Yoram Chanda, Joseph Mulenga, William Kamwanga and Luka Mutoshi.

Others in the fray are Patson Kwataine, Golden Mashata, Elliot Kampukesa, Rickson Ng’ambi, Abel Salim Nyirongo and Ian Sindayi.Zimbabwe, however, pose a strong challenge in the battle of the Zambezi.

Mongameli Tshuma to guide Zimbabwe

Highlanders striker Mongameli Tshuma stood out in their previous match, scoring once and providing an assist, while captain Marvelous Nakamba dictated play in midfield. The Warriors will be without US-based defender Teenage Hadebe, who has been suspended for breaching camp rules.

Assistant captain Golden Mashata said the tournament has been valuable for player development across the region, adding that the team is prepared for the challenge ahead. Zimbabwe coach Mario Marinica, meanwhile, has warned against underestimating Zambia, noting that Chipolopolo play a structured, system-based game despite their youthful lineup.

With regional pride, bragging rights and silverware at stake, both sides head into the final seeking to lift the Mukuru Four Nations trophy in what promises to be a competitive contest.
