Mutasim Jaafar re-elected as Sudan FA president amidst civil war

Mutasim Jaafar has won re-election to remain president of the Sudan Football Association (SFA). The long-serving football administrator was the sole candidate running in the election.

The CAF exco member received a major vote of confidence. Out of the 65 delegates, 54 participated in the election. The election was held in the city of Meroë, North Sudan, due to the ongoing civil war in the country.

Jaafar, who headed East African sub-confederation CECAFA prior to 2020, received congratulatory messages from both FIFA president Gianni Infantino and CAF president Patrice Motsepe, who affirmed their full support for Jaafar during his new tenure.

After his election, Jaafar said he would work with everyone for the sake of Sudanese football. “I affirm that I will cooperate with everyone, including those who did not support me, for the betterment of football in Sudan.”

Although the country is in the midst of a civil war, the Sudan national team and the nation’s top club Al Hilal are performing well on the continental stage. Their local-based national team will play in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in August.
