Malawi’s TNM Super League: Wanderers move to top spot

Forward Blessings Mwalilino’s 51st minute strike sent Mighty Wanderers back to the TNM Super League top spot in Malawi on Sunday, displacing rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.

The Nomads, as Wanderers are also called, marched into Champion Stadium, some 100 kilometres away from the capital Lilongwe, having watched Bullets beat Chitipa United 2-0 the previous day.

Harry Chiwaya and Babatunde Adepoju were the scorers for the record champions on the road in a match that ended with some skirmishes from home fans unhappy with officiation.

In another match played on Sunday, relegation-threatened Mzuzu City Hammers registered a rare third win of the season, beating Ekhaya FC 2-1 on Sunday to deny the rookies a third spot.

Moses Gwayi scored for the visitors on the half-hour mark before Wakisa Mwakifuna cushioned the lead with 18 minutes remaining on the clock. Clever Chikwata pulled one back in the 85th minute.

Ekhaya’s sixth defeat in 16 games gifted Karonga United, 3-1 victors over Moyale Barracks in the Northern Region, a third spot.

Elsewhere, Blue Eagles suffered a home 0-1 loss to Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos in Lilongwe where Blessings Phiri was the scorer.
