Former Nigeria national team head coach Jose Peseiro has stated that his departure from Egypt club Zamalek was not based on technical reasons.

The Portuguese tactician’s service was dispensed with by the Egyptian club on May 7 on the back of unimpressive results.

The 65-year-old led the Super Eagles to the runner-up position at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations where they lost 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast. Peseiro says he did not know why he was allowed to leave the club.

“My departure from Zamalek wasn’t for technical reasons. I suddenly found myself out of the team. I wasn’t surprised by my departure in this way. The Zamalek team wasn’t in good shape, and Egyptian football is influenced by the fans, and perhaps that’s the reason I left coaching Zamalek, but I was very happy to coach a team as prestigious as Zamalek,” Peseiro told ON Sport.

“I don’t know the reason for my departure from Zamalek. There is no clear reason for that. We had a lot of work ahead of us, and we still had a chance in the league, but as I said, football in Egypt is affected by the fans. The Egyptian people are overly emotional.”

Zamalek appointed Ayman El-Ramadi as Peseiro’s replacement and they currently occupy the third spot on 32 points from 17 matches – seven behind second place Al Ahly and ten below leaders Pyramids FC.
