Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has stated that his struggling side have what it takes to take something away from their Betway Premiership meeting with Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
Chiefs are on a three-game losing run against Pirates, and will be looking to turn that around and record their 46th league victory over them. Prior to losing their last three league derbies, Amakhosi had won five in succession, which was a record in the PSL era.
With the derby bragging rights being at stake, there is a lot riding on this game, as Chiefs have the chance to have a major say in their rivals’ bid to catch Mamelodi Sundowns in the league title race. Pirates’ quest for glory in the league suffered a blow following their 1-0 defeat against Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday.
“If Kaizer Chiefs win the derby on Saturday, it’s not going to be be a surprise,” Nabi said on SuperSport TV, as quoted by idiskitimes. “If Orlando Pirates win the derby, however, it won't be a surprise either. Those are the two biggest clubs in South Africa.
“Despite our current league standing, we believe that two big clubs are going to meet on Saturday, even if we are not in a very good position. But we feel that whoever wins on Saturday, it’s because they deserved it.
“We say that the biggest clubs can get ill, but they never die. We believe we are the biggest club in South Africa at the moment. We might be a little bit ill, but we believe that we are still alive, and we can do something.”
This will be the 58th derby league meeting between the teams since 1996/97. In the clubs' previous 57 league clashes since the start of the PSL era, Chiefs have won 18, while Pirates have managed 15, and 24 have ended all square
