Nairobi United have been crowned the new Football Kenya Federation FKF Cup champions after beating Gor Mahia 2-1 in the final staged at Ulinzi Sports Complex on Sunday.

The newly promoted side stunned K’Ogalo with an early goal in the sixth minute when Frank Ouya found the back of the net. Gor Mahia waited for the 38th minute to level matters through Ben Stanley Omondi.

The first half ended both teams tied at 1-1 and at the start of the second period, Nairobi United continued to press Gor Mahia for the second goal.

However, they had to wait until the 78th minute when Enock Masaka scored to make it 2-1. Gor Mahia were provided with an opportunity to level matters again from the penalty spot, but Alpha Onyango saw his effort saved by the keeper.

United resorted to playing a defensive game in the added four minutes and the final whistle blew handing them the trophy and a ticket to represent the country in the CAF Confederation Cup. Kenya Police FC, who won the league, will go for the Champions League.

Nairobi United also emulated Mathare United, who in 1998 won the Moi Golden Cup as a second-tier team and earned promotion to the top tier in the same season. For Gor Mahia, they ended the season empty-handed having lost the Premier League title to Police.

Nairobi United enjoyed a fairytale run of this year’s competition. Their journey began in the Round of 64 with a 3-1 win over Global Connection, before entering a giant-killing run. They eliminated Tusker FC in the Round of 32, holding the Brewers to a 1-1 draw before winning 5-4 in a penalty shootout. In the Round of 16, they repeated the feat, edging out KCB 6-5 on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

The quarter-finals saw Nairobi United dominate former Cup winners Kakamega Homeboyz with a commanding 2-0 win. In the semi-finals, they faced a resilient Mara Sugar side, drawing 1-1 in regular time before triumphing 3-1 in yet another penalty shootout.
