The Namibia under-17 women’s national team has started camp training for the continental World Cup qualifiers for the age group.

The Baby Gladiators reported for camp on Sunday in Windhoek to prepare for the first qualifying round matches against Uganda starting on January 16, 2025.

Namibia will travel to Kampala Hamz Stadium for the first leg match on January 16, 2025, before welcoming Uganda three days later at the same stadium. The Baby Gladiators’ coach Hafeni Ndeitunga has since told the Namibia Football Association media that he is focusing on building a new team.

“We are starting from the ground up and assembling a new team,” he said. “After the 2024 COSAFA Girls Championship, we needed to come back to the drawing board and work out a better plan. The results were bad but we learned what works for us and what doesn’t and what key areas needed improvement.”

He said he would strive to maintain most players from last year’s CAF Under-15 Schools Championship and COSAFA Girls Championship. He added that he is happy with the players’ response to training.

“The girls are determined and putting in the work for the next two days the technical team and I will be working on trimming the squad and after that, we can focus on the tactical aspects and how we want the girls to play,” he said.

Meanwhile, Uganda coach Sheryl Botes has summoned a provisional squad of 39 players to begin preparations on Wednesday for the duel against Namibia. The residential camp will be held at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.

The overall winner between Namibia and Uganda will face Kenya in the second round.
