Crested Cranes defenders Shadia Nankya and Aisha Nantongo made history as the first Ugandan female footballers to win medals at the CAF Women’s Champions League.
The duo achieved the milestone with their Egyptian club, FC Masar, which secured third place in the tournament after a thrilling 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Nigeria’s Edo Queens over the weekend in Morocco.
The fourth edition of the prestigious competition held in Morocco saw Masar claim the bronze medal and a cash prize of $350,000 after a goalless draw in regulation and extra time.
Nankya and Nantongo were instrumental in Masar’s historic campaign with Nankya shining as one of the tournament's standout players. She was named Player of the Match in Masar’s stunning 1-0 group stage victory over defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns. Her impressive performances earned her a place in the group stage Best XI.
The final saw DR Congo’s TP Mazembe make history by clinching their first-ever CAF Women’s Champions League title. Mazembe defeated 2022 champions and hosts AS FAR 1-0 to claim the trophy, gold medals, and a $600,000 prize.
Masar’s achievement underscores the growing influence of Ugandan players on the continental stage. Nankya and Nantongo's historic accomplishment will inspire the next generation of Ugandan female footballers to aim for similar heights in their careers.
