Olympique Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi has revealed the possibility that Moroccan defender Nayef Aguerd could miss the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations due to injury.
Aguerd picked up an injury during Marseille’s French Ligue 1 match against Stade Brest on Saturday in Round 12 of the French league.
Speaking to the media, De Zerbi said:
“Nayef Aguerd is still suffering from pain in his groin area, and it has worsened. He will undergo medical tests, but it’s important for him to rest for a while.”
He added:
“He might miss the Africa Cup of Nations, and there’s also the French Super Cup in Kuwait — although I don’t understand why we’re going there to play.”
The coach continued:
“January will be decisive for our position in the UEFA Champions League. I just hope his injury is not serious and that he recovers quickly.”
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will take place in Morocco from December 21 to January 18.
The Moroccan national team is facing another injury concern ahead of the tournament, as Paris Saint-Germain’s Achraf Hakimi is also recovering from an ankle injury that will keep him out for around six to seven weeks.
