The club further explained Aguerd had continued playing despite suffering from increasing pain and discomfort, which eventually reached a level where he could no longer continue under those conditions.
Despite the conservative treatments provided by the club’s medical staff, the condition worsened, making surgery unavoidable, according to the club statement.

“From waking up until going to bed, and sometimes even during the night, it had become permanent. Despite all the medical protocols implemented in recent months, it was unfortunately no longer enough. The operation therefore became unavoidable.”
He added: “This decision should have been made a while ago, but I wanted to continue and find the best possible solutions before resorting to this.
“Now it’s time for rest and recovery. I hope to be ready in time to help Olympique de Marseille during the final sprint of the season, this time at 100%, without pain.”
On his message to Marseille and the Atlas Lions, he said: “I also thank my teammates on the national team and at OM, who have seen me suffer in recent months and who have supported me a lot.”
Following the operation, Aguerd will begin a rehabilitation program under the supervision of Marseille’s medical staff as he works toward returning to the pitch.
The club added the defender has shown great determination and will do everything possible to return as quickly as possible in order to help Marseille during the decisive phase of the season.
