NBC Premier League: Singida Black Stars slip up late against Namungo

Ambitious club Singida Black Stars suffered another setback in Tanzania’s Ligi Kuu Bara (NBC Premier League) on Thursday after conceding late in a 1-1 draw against hosts Namungo.

Kenyan striker Elvis Rupia put the visitors ahead on the hour mark with a penalty kick after a first half that featured few opportunities for either team.

However, the intensity and chances increased over the final half hour and the Black Stars’ usually reliable defense failed to finish the job. Black Stars goalkeeper Amas Obasogie spilled a free kick into his six-yard box and was unable to recover the ball, allowing substitute Fabrice Ngoy to finish from close range in second half stoppage time.

The result leaves Black Stars in 10th place, far beyond the pace set by Tanzania’s top clubs Young Africans, Simba SC and Azam FC.

Earlier on Thursday, TRA United (formerly Tabora United) leaped out to a four-goal lead in the opening hour for a 4-1 victory at Fountain Gate FC. The result moves TRA further away from the relegation zone, with three point separating them from relegation playoff spots.

Fountain Gate remain second from bottom and and have not won a league match since late November. Now all the focus turns to the country’s biggest derby, the Kariakoo Derby between Young Africans and Simba SC, which will take place on Sunday at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar.

Where are Singida and TRA on the league table?
