UPL: NEC, BUL share spoils as Lugazi run riot over Buhimba

Matchday six of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League produced contrasting outcomes as NEC and BUL settled for a 1-1 draw at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, while Lugazi FC thrashed Buhimba United Saints 5-2 at the Lugazi Arena.

At Lugogo, Joseph Dhata gave NEC the advantage in the 27th minute, finishing off a well-crafted team move to send the home fans into celebration. However, BUL responded just before halftime through Jerome Kiirya, who struck in the additional minute of the first half to restore parity.

The result saw BUL climb to fourth place on the log with 10 points — level with SC Villa and Entebbe UPPC, who sit above and below them respectively on goal difference. NEC, on the other hand, remain 12th with six points from as many games.

Over in Lugazi, the hosts turned on the style, recording their second win of the season in emphatic fashion. Freedom Mungudit led the way with a brace, while David Bagoole, Abdul Kalanzi, and Dawson Mafumu also found the back of the net.

Sadick Moro’s strike and a Richard Ayiko own goal provided mere consolation for Buhimba, who endured their third straight defeat, conceding 11 goals in that poor run after initially enjoying a bright three-match winning start to the campaign.

The result lifts Lugazi to ninth place with eight points, while the Bunyoro-based side slip to sixth on nine points.
The league now heads into a recess as the Uganda Cranes gear up for two international friendlies in Morocco.
