Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has revealed he was not happy despite his 10-man side progressing to the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup with a 2-0 win over Mpheni Home Defenders on Sunday.

Tashreeq Matthews opened the scoring in the eighth minute against the ABC Motsepe side at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium. Matthews was then sent off on 48 minutes, but only after a Bathusi Aubaas had put Sundowns in control of the tie in the 27th minute.

“Obviously after you score the second goal, your expectation is that you’re going to finish the game with a better score,” said Cardoso on SuperSport TV as quoted by idiskitimes.

“And that’s what I told the lads at halftime that we were supposed to take the responsibility of scoring more goals, and it was obvious that we could have even done it in the first half.

“Anyway, we are in the second half and the fact that Tashreeq makes a mistake and gets expelled obliges us just to manage the game and that’s what we did.”

Cardoso continued: “I tried as much as possible to hold the players outside that were more charged, so that we didn’t need to put too much game time on their legs, let’s say, and finish the game. That’s our objective.

“So obviously the answer, direct and straight is I’m not happy because we should have won by more numbers, but in the end, we did the job, and I have nothing to say.”

Sundowns will shift their focus to the Betway Premiership where they face Marumo Gallants at Seisa Ramabodu Stadium on Wednesday.
