African influence once again proved decisive in the Saudi Pro League as Egyptian defender Ahmed Hegazi and Algerian midfielder Said Benrahma played pivotal roles in Neom’s 3-2 victory over Al Riyadh in Round 4.
It was a night to remember for Hegazi, who not only marshalled his team’s backline but also left his mark on the scoresheet. After receiving a yellow card in the 21st minute, the Egypt international responded in the best possible way, heading home Neom’s second goal just seven minutes later. His effort restored Neom’s lead before halftime, setting the tone for the rest of the contest.
Earlier, Uruguayan forward Luciano Rodríguez had given Neom the perfect start with a goal inside two minutes, only for Khalil Al-Absi to equalize for the hosts. But Hegazi’s goal ensured Neom went into the break with a 2-1 advantage.
In the second half, it was Benrahma’s turn to shine. The Algerian playmaker provided an assist for Alexandre Lacazette’s strike that made it 3-1. Although an own goal from Abdoulaye Doucouré in the 77th minute gave Al Riyadh hope, Neom stayed solid in the closing stages to seal a win.
The result lifted Neom to nine points, level with defending champions Al Ittihad and three behind leaders Al Nassr, who maintain a perfect record. For Al Riyadh, the defeat leaves them stranded on three points in 13th place.
