CECAFA, composed of eleven member nations, was led by interim president Alexandre Muyenge of Burundi, and Uganda’s Moses Magogo withdrew his name from consideration moments before the election, leaving Weldehaimanot elected unopposed. He will lead for the next four years as per the regulations.
The election was observed by both FIFA and CAF. Cameroonian Football Federation president Samuel Eto’o was among the attendees at the General Assembly in Djibouti.
According to East Africa’s regional association, in assuming this role, Weldehaimanot vowed to prioritize financial transparency, uncompromised integrity, and robust capacity building for staff in order to drive the growth of football in East and Central Africa.
Weldehaimanot has been head of the ENFF for the past four years and is also a member of the FIFA Grassroots and Amateur Football Committee. Under his helm, Eritrea failed to compete in the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Nonetheless, he promised that the national side will enter the 2027 AFCON qualifier preliminaries in March, as they are set to face Eswatini.
