Major League Soccer club New York Red Bulls formally announced the signing of Cameroonian forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old former Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain player joins on a two-year contract through the 2025 and 2026 MLS seasons with a club option for the 2027 campaign. Choupo-Moting's arrival was previously confirmed by media reports a few months after he was released by Bayern.

Notably the German-born forward arrives as a Designated Player meaning he will take up one of a few spots occupied by players whose salaries do not count against the salary limit imposed on all MLS clubs. Choupo-Moting will join former RB Leipzig and Sweden national team star Emil Forsberg at Red Bulls who fell just short of an MLS title on December 7 with a 2-1 defeat to Los Angeles Galaxy in the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Choupo-Moting will join the team ahead of preseason and preparations for the 2025 MLS season which begins in February. It does not look like the versatile forward will be involved with the Cameroon national team moving forward after being overlooked for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations played earlier this year as well as the last three international windows.
