Egyptian defender Mohamed Abdelmonem suffered a serious knee injury during OGC Nice’s 3-1 win over French Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain on Friday. The former Al Ahly center back was replaced in the second half after a collision with PSG midfielder Fabian Ruiz and it was announced that Abdelmonem tore his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), the club confirmed on Saturday.

It has been a difficult maiden season at the Southern France outfit for Abdelmonem, which ended on a devastating note with the defender in tears while being stretchered off the Parc des Princes pitch. Nice head coach Franck Haise on Friday said it could be a serious one.

“It doesn’t seem reassuring,” said the former RC Lens trainer regarding Abdelmonem’s injury. To the dismay of the player the injury was proven to be an ACL tear. This development will force the Egypt international out of action for several months. Nice have already shown support to their player in this time of difficulty.

Abdelmonem made eighteen appearances in all competitions this season, twelve of them in Ligue 1 since joining from Ahly for a €4.2 million fee. OGC Nice are fourth with 54 points after ending PSG’s unbeaten run on Friday night.
