Nigeria international Wilfred Ndidi has indicated that the Super Eagles are more focused on qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup than putting a premium on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The three-time African champions are struggling with their bid to book a ticket for the next global football showpiece in Canada, USA and Mexico as they occupy 4th place in Group C on seven points from six matches.
South Africa are top of the log on 13 points with Rwanda and Benin sharing the second spot on 8 points apiece. The Super Eagles will participate in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament to be held in Morocco later this year from December 2025 to January 2026.
And with World Cup qualifiers resuming in September, Leicester City midfielder Ndidi says they are currently focused on the World Cup qualifiers.
“It’s a privilege to represent Nigeria. It’s an honour. Once you’re called up, it’s a goosebumps kind of feeling. And the games when the national team is going on, it’s one thing where your family back home are really, really proud. So I think it’s an amazing thing,” Ndidi said on Showmax.
“But we’re not thinking about AFCON right now. We’re focusing on trying to qualify for the World Cup, which is the most important of the moments. And then we look forward to the AFCON,” he added.
