Nigeria star Onyeka delivers Chelle verdict: ‘He’s loving coach’

Nigeria forward Frank Onyeka has showered praise on coach Eric Chelle as the Super Eagles prepare to kick off their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign in Morocco.

The Malian tactician will lead Nigeria in Morocco despite his failure to guide the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Nigeria failed to qualify after losing to DR Congo in the African Playoffs.

“I think he came in and changed everything – the way we played, the way we’ve been set up, and his philosophy is just really good,” said Onyeka as quoted by BBC Sport Africa. He’s a loving coach. The way he speaks to the players, he makes fun of the players.

“It’s just different compared to what we had before.”

Onyeka bemoans absence of Benjamin Frederick

Onyeka further discussed the absence of Benjamin Frederick, who will miss the AFCON for Nigeria after picking an injury while on loan in Belgium. Onyeka and Frederick both play for Brentford in the Premier League but Frederick is currently on loan with Belgian Pro League club Dender EH.

“It’s a big blow for us because Benjamin has integrated himself into the (Nigeria) team and everybody loves him,” said Onyeka. “He has done so well in the games that he has played. We expected him to be a very big part going into the tournament.

“And as a guy, as a player, he’s just outstanding. The way he reads the game defensively is just so strong.”

Onyeka concluded: “Playing for Nigeria is a pressure, but we are used to it. If you see some comments every time we lose games, it’s annoying. But I understand them (the fans) because this is something that they love.

“Football is something that makes people happy, brings people together. Every time Nigeria is playing, everyone is interested.”

Nigeria, who are drawn in Group C alongside Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda, will kick off their campaign against Taifa Stars at Fez Stadium on Tuesday, December 23.
