The Super Eagles of Nigeria have received a significant boost just hours before their make-or-break 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff final against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).
Midfield lynchpin Wilfred Ndidi has been officially cleared by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to feature in the decisive match on Sunday.
Concerns had mounted among Nigerian fans and media following reports that Ndidi’s early yellow card received during the Super Eagles’ commanding 4-1 victory over Gabon on Thursday would see him miss the final playoff leg due to accumulated cautions.
However, the Nigerian senior men’s national team’s official social media channel (Instagram) confirmed the vital news on Saturday, citing a favourable ruling from CAF.
“CAF has confirmed that Wilfred Ndidi is eligible to feature for the Super Eagles in Sunday’s playoff clash against DR Congo. Cautions accumulated during the World Cup qualifiers do not carry over into the playoffs; only confirmed suspensions apply.”
This clarification is a massive relief for the three-time African champions, who remain hyper-aware of continental regulations. The memory of regional rivals, Bafana Bafana of South Africa, being docked three points for fielding an ineligible player (Teboho Mokoena) during the earlier stages of the qualifiers serves as a potent warning against procedural missteps.
Ndidi’s availability is paramount for Coach Gernot Rohr’s side. The Leicester City midfielder was arguably the Man of the Match in the semi-final win against Gabon, delivering an impressive and tireless performance. His instrumental role was capped off by a decisive assist for Chidera Ejuke’s goal in extra time, showcasing his influence on both the defensive stability and offensive transition of the team.
With Ndidi now guaranteed to anchor the midfield, Nigeria’s path to the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada is bolstered by the presence of one of its most essential players as they face a formidable DR Congo side, dubbed the Leopards.
