The Nigeria women’s national team is set to face Portugal’s A Selecção in an international friendly on June 23 in Lisbon.
The highly anticipated encounter is set to kickoff at 1 PM WAT in a match that serves as part of final preparations before the Nigerian side head to Morocco for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
This fixture, officially confirmed by the Portuguese Football Federation, is a significant component of the Nigerian squad’s week-long training camp being held in Portugal. The timing of this camp is no coincidence; it’s strategically aligned with the FIFA international match window, which runs from June 23 to July 5 directly preceding the WAFCON finals from July 5 to 26.
Having previously battled to a thrilling 2-2 draw, these two nations are set for another compelling encounter. This upcoming match serves as a crucial opportunity for both teams to fine tune their tactics and bolster their psychological readiness.
Beyond the official friendly, the Super Falcons will also engage in a private test match against the Portuguese squad. With one of these fixtures officially sanctioned by FIFA, it presents a prime chance for head coach Justin Madugu to assess his team’s performance under competitive pressure.
The Lisbon camp aims to help the Falcons acclimate to European conditions and fine-tune their strategies ahead of the continental tournament in Morocco, where they will be chasing their 10th African title.
Also, the Super Falcons are set to engage in two warm-up matches against Cameroon as part of their domestic preparations. The first friendly is scheduled for Saturday, May 31, at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo with the return leg to be played on Tuesday, June 3, at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, both in Ogun State.
