The Nigeria women’s national team (Super Falcons) began their 2024 Women’s African Cup Of Nation (WAFCON) campaign with a 3-0 victory over Tunisia on Sunday at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Morocco.
The nine-time African champion Super Falcons, who entered as one of the favorites in the tournament, took only four minutes to show their intentions as they took an early lead when a brilliant cross from Rinsola Babajide found the head of Asisat Oshoala.
After stretches of dominance from the West African side, Babajide turned goal scorer just before halftime, giving Nigeria a strong lead at the break
In the second half, the Super Falcons came close to handing the North African side a chance when a penalty kick was awarded in the 78th minute but after a review from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the penalty was overturned because the referee spotted a foul by an Eagles of Carthage player in the build-up to Osinachi Ohale’s challenge.
Nigeria then tightened their grip on the match as substitute Chinwendu Ihezuo found the bottom corner with a composed left-footed finish.
The victory sees coach Justin Madugu’s ladies begin their campaign on a strong foot after losing their last two opening games at the WAFCON.
The Super Falcons now sit at the top of Group B and now wait for Thursday when they will trade tackles with Botswana at the same ground. Tunisia will face fellow North African side Algeria, who face Botswana to complete Sunday’s slate of games, in their next match on Thursday.
