According to TalkSports, Nigeria international and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been placed in an induced coma after undergoing abdominal surgery.
The Super Eagle collided with the post in the 88th minute of the 2-2 draw against Leicester at the City Ground on Sunday, as he attempted to get on the end of a cross from Anthony Elanga.
He came back on and completed the match at the City Ground despite appearing to be in discomfort. He was subsequently taken to hospital on Monday after complications were discovered by club medical staff.
On Tuesday, Forest issued a statement confirming that Awoniyi had undergone an abdominal surgery. “The Club can confirm Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday's match against Leicester City.
“Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo. The Club will provide further updates when appropriate,” read part of the statement.
“The seriousness of his injury is a powerful reminder of the physical risks in the game, and why a player’s health and well-being must always come first.”
Awoniyi, who joined the Premier League outfit from Bundesliga side Union Berlin in June 2022, had only been on the pitch for five minutes, having come on as a late substitute for Ibrahim Sangare.
