Nigeria striker Tolu Arokodare nets consolation in Genk’s loss at Standard Liege

Nigeria international Tolu Arokodare opened his goal account in the Belgium Jupiler Pro League but his strike was not enough as his club Genk suffered a slim loss at Standard Liege on Sunday.

Genk travelled to the Stade Maurice Dufrasne with the aim of clawing their firth three points in three games but that dream was jolted in the 37th minute when Standard Liege shot themselves ahead.

Veteran France forward, Thomas Henry spun in from the penalty spot leaving the visitors to do much of the chasing throughout the first half. Genk failed to pull parity with the first half proceedings ending at 1-0 for Standard.

Standard made life more difficult for Genk after American defender Marlon Fossey doubled the lead in the 54th minute. The ten-time domestic champions held their guns until the 70th minute when they conceded to Genk.

Nigeria striker, Tolu Arokodare found what would only be a consolation ending the entire action by 2-1 to further compound the season’s start for Genk who have picked just one point from three opening games.

Arokodare will look to score more goals subsequently with Genk traveling to OH Leuven on August 15 for their next game.

In another fixture, Ivory Coast midfielder Farouck Adekami rose from the bench to score in Royal Antwerp’s 3-1 home win over OH Leuven. The 19-year-old’s 90th minute goal came prior to Mali youngster, Mahamadou Doumbia’s 77th minute strike.
