Nigeria tame Ghana in pre-WAFCON preparation friendly

The Ghana women’s national team completed their pre-Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) friendlies with a heavy loss against 11-time African women’s champions Nigeria. The Black Queens lost by 3-1 to the Super Falcons in a friendly match at the Lanoria Complex on Sunday.

Ghana had recorded two straight wins prior to facing their continental rivals. Their first win was a 2-1 score line against Botswana before dispatching Benin by 4-2 in the second game. But Super Falcons stars Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade scored both sides of halftime to make it 3-0 after Chiwendu Ihezuo prevously opened the scoring in the 34th minute.

The Black Queens pulled a goal back late on in the 88th minute. The exercise paved the way for Ghana head coach Kim Lars Björkegren to assess his squad ahead of the 2024 Women Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted in Morocco next month.

Ghana are paired in Group C alongside Mali, Tanzania and South Africa for the tournament that kicks off on July 5. They are looking for their first trophy after 13 appearances at the tournament. Nigeria will begin their WAFCON campaign in Group B on July 6 against Tunisia before facing Botswana and Algeria.
