Al Ahly’s poor domestic form continued as they were held to a goalless draw by Ghazl El Mahalla at El Mahalla Stadium on Monday during Round 4 of the Nile Egyptian League.
The Red Devils had skipped Matchday 3 due to a bye, but head coach José Riveiro fielded a strong lineup including Mahmoud Trezeguet, Ahmed Sayed “Zizo,” Achraf Bencharki, and Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane. Despite their attacking firepower, Al Ahly failed to find the back of the net.
Trezeguet came closest in first-half stoppage time when his effort rattled the post, while Moroccan defender Achraf Dari struck the crossbar with a long-range shot in added time of the second half.
Ghazl El Mahalla, meanwhile, extended their remarkable streak of goalless draws, collecting their fourth point of the campaign after finishing 0-0 in all four of their matches so far—against National Bank, Smouha, El Gouna, and now Al Ahly.
For Al Ahly, the stalemate raises further questions about Riveiro’s tenure. The Spanish coach has overseen six matches in all competitions so far—three in the league and three in the FIFA Club World Cup—recording just one win, four draws, and one defeat.
Al Ahly now have five points from three matches (one win and two draws), while Ghazl El Mahalla sit on four points from their four draws.
Looking ahead, Al Ahly face Pyramids on Saturday in a big Nile League clash, while Ghazl El Mahalla travel to Ismaily on the same day.
