NPFL disowns from proposed top scorer award, laments unauthorized use of naming rights

The Nigeria Premier Football League, (NPFL) has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the blatant disregard of its naming right by unscrupulous corporate organisations and their collaborators reportedly flaunting themselves as organizers, despite not having official authorization.

This observation was made by the chairman of the NPFL, Gbenga Elegbeleye on the heels of an announced Eunisell Golden Boot Award for the highest goal scorer in the just ended 2024/25 season.

Elegbeleye while speaking with NPFL media stated the league welcomes value-adding initiatives such as the proposed ₦3.6 million payment to NPFL top scorer Anas Yusuf, but however they are specific established protocols for organizations to partner with the League on awards.

“It is not right for any persons or organisations to use the name of the NPFL and announce an award without recourse to the asset owners.”

He added that legal actions would be taken in other to protect the image of the NPFL .

“We are going to use every legal channel to protect our asset from this ambush of the NPFL. We will write to the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission so that this illegal activities will stop once for all.

There must come a time when we must have to put a stop to end impunity no matter how long the illegality has been going on. This is the time and we must get things right.

The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, June 13, 2025, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in GRA Ikeja, Lagos to present a cash prize to the 2024-25 NPFL top scorer.
