Coach Finidi George's Rivers United have suffered a significant setback in their pursuit of a second Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title after falling 0-2 away to 6th-place Kano Pillars on Friday.
"The Pride of Rivers," currently second with 58 points on the NPFL table, had an opportunity to narrow the gap with league leaders Remo Stars, who hold 65 points, as Matchday 35 commenced. However, they were unable to secure a victory, losing a crucial match to Ahmed Musa's side.
The first half concluded in a goalless draw, with the most significant action coming from Rivers United midfielder Taofeek Otaniyi, whose shot on goal was saved by goalkeeper Abuchi Okeke.
At the start of the second half, the "Sai Masu Gida," gained control, and their efforts paid off when captain Ahmed Musa put the four-time NPFL champions ahead in the 64th minute. Shortly after, Rabiu Ali doubled the lead for Pillars in the 75th minute from the penalty spot after his earlier attempt on goal was blocked by Rivers Center back Stephen Manyo's hand in the box.
With this 0-2 defeat for Rivers United, a win for Remo Stars in their Match Day 35 fixture against Niger Tornadoes at home on Sunday, April 27, 2025, would see them clinch their first-ever NPFL title. This comes after they finished as runners-up in the 2023/24 season, while Rivers United ended that campaign in 8th place.
As the NPFL season approaches its climax, Matchday 35 continues on Sunday across various centers. Nasarawa United will face Heartland in Gombe, Plateau United will host Bendel Insurance in Jos, Kwara United will battle Lobi Stars in Ilorin, and the highly anticipated Oriental derby between Enugu Rangers and Enyimba will take place in Enugu.
Elsewhere, Sunshine Stars will face Katsina United in Ijebu-Ode, Abia Warriors will lock horns with Shooting Stars in Umuahia, and Bayelsa United will welcome El-Kanemi Warriors in Yenagoa. Finally, Akwa United will play host to Ikorodu City, with all teams vying for vital points as the 2024/2025 season draws to its end.
