Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has reiterated its commitment to upholding the integrity of its framework by strictly prohibiting the sale of league slots.
This declaration was made by NPFL Chairman, Gbenga Elegbeleye, during the league’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and official draws held on Monday.
Elegbeleye addressed recent concerns regarding Heartland’s acquisition of Beyond Limits’ slot, as he clarified that Beyond Limits and Remo Stars are both owned by the same entity, an arrangement that directly contravenes the NPFL’s rule against dual ownership of clubs within the premier league.
“In this situation, Beyond Limits and Remo Stars are from the same source. We cannot allow one entity to own two clubs in the NPFL; it’s against the rules.”
The NPFL chairman also debunked any notions of there being a monetary transaction involved in the acquisition of the slot. “The proprietor of Beyond Limits never mentioned money. We met with them as stakeholders, explained the situation, and they willingly agreed to step aside without any argument or financial demands.”
Elegbeleye added that the league had approached other clubs, including Sporting Lagos and Gombe United, who declined the offer to step in, before eventually Heartland was selected. As if the situation is to arise again the same method would be followed.
“If a similar case arises where a single entity owns two clubs, we’ll handle it the same way. But outside such circumstances, no club will be allowed to sell its slot.”
Meanwhile, the NPFL confirmed the promotion of Wikki Tourists, Kun Khalifat, Warri Wolves, and Barau FC from the Nigeria National League (NNL) to the top flight, while Lobi Stars, Akwa United, Heartland, and Sunshine Stars were officially relegated.
The 2025/26 NPFL season is set to kick off on August 22, 2025.
