Rivers United F.C. have climbed to the summit of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after securing a late 1-0 home victory over Barau FC in a rescheduled fixture on Wednesday.
The encounter, played at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, saw the “Pride of Rivers” pick up their first win in three NPFL games, ending a six-match winless run across both the league and the CAF Champions League.
It was end-to-end action as the newly promoted Barau FC strove to secure their place in Nigeria’s top-flight league following their matchday 27 draw with Warri Wolves.
Stephen Manyo’s strike in the 85th minute was all Finidi George’s side needed to move to the top of the table.
With three outstanding games still to play, the victory lifts Rivers United back to the top of the NPFL standings with 45 points.
Meanwhile, Barau FC sits in 13th place and will look to bounce back on Sunday when they face Plateau United.
