Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has suspend Plateau United’s goalkeeper, Adewale Adeyinka, with immediate effect over allegations of engaging in betting activities.
The decision was confirmed in an official letter from the NPFL’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, addressed to both the player and his club.
Adeyinka’s registration has been put on hold pending a full investigation into the serious allegations. This action comes after Plateau United leveled claims against the goalkeeper, which were further substantiated by a subsequent incident.
The NPFL’s rules are explicit on the matter. According to Article 15.5, Section B of the league’s Framework and Rules, players are strictly prohibited from being involved in any form of betting on football matches, with violators facing severe penalties under Section C. The league has emphasized that such activities not only violate its code of conduct but also undermine the very integrity of the competition and bring the game into disrepute.
Adeyinka will have the chance to defend himself as the investigation progresses.
