It was yet another routine of brilliance for Malawian Temwa Chawinga who scored for Kansas City on Saturday when they beat Utah Royals FC 3-0 in a National Women’s Soccer League match.
Chawinga opened the scoring in the 22nd minute in a counter-attack that ended with Michelle Cooper providing an assist for the Malawian at CPKC Stadium.
The 26-year-old has scored three goals in three league games this season and looks set to defend her Golden Boot Award.
16 minutes later, provider-turned scorer Cooper netted Kansas City’s second goal before Brazilian midfielder Debinha put the game beyond reach for the visitors with a goal two minutes into added time.
The third consecutive win saw the second-placed Kansas City pile the pressure on leaders Orlando Pride with mere goal difference separating the top two. Utah Royals are second from the basement with one point from three games.
Orlando Pride kept the leading momentum with a home 2-1 win over San Diego Wave with veteran Marta and Haley McCutheon on target for the hosts whereas Nigerian Chiamaka Okwuchukwu grabbed the consolation for the visitors.
