Uganda playmaker Allan Okello expressed that the Africa Cup of Nations is not merely another international assignment, but a decisive arena where players are measured, moulded and introduced to the wider continent.
Speaking ahead of the Cranes’ pivotal Group C clash against neighbours Tanzania in Rabat on Saturday, the Vipers SC playmaker described the AFCON as a rare privilege that carries both intense scrutiny and enormous promise. To Okello, it is a stage that tests character just as much as talent.

The 25-year-old admits the tournament comes with heavy expectations, but insists that pressure is inseparable from opportunity at the highest level. AFCON, he says, offers players the chance to express themselves fearlessly and leave a lasting impression.
Opening their campaign with a defeat to Tunisia served as a sobering reminder of the standards required on Africa’s biggest stage. Okello acknowledged that the Cranes fell short in key areas, but stressed that the setback has sparked reflection rather than despair within the camp.
According to the midfielder, the focus has shifted to learning quickly and making the necessary adjustments. He believes the team has taken valuable lessons from the Tunisia loss and is determined to show a sharper, more composed performance in their next outing.
The Cranes find themselves in a fiercely competitive Group C alongside Tunisia, Nigeria and Tanzania, leaving little room for error. Yet the Vipers SC attacker remains optimistic that a strong result against Tanzania could reset their campaign and reignite hopes of progression to the knockout rounds.
For the Cranes, Saturday’s encounter is more than a must-win fixture — it is a chance to respond, to grow, and to remind Africa that they belong on this stage.
