Kenya national team captain Michael Olunga has welcomed the decision by youngster Ryan Ogam to sign for Wolfsberger in Austria.
The Austrian top-tier confirmed the signing of Ogam from Tusker on September 3, 2025, following the international break. Club President Dietmar Riegler expressed his enthusiasm, praising Ogam’s talent and potential.
“We are delighted to welcome Ryan to Wolfsberger AC. He is an exciting young striker with great potential. We have been following his progress at Tusker FC closely, and his recent performances with the Harambee Stars have further underlined his quality,” Riegler said.
Reacting to the transfer, Olunga, who features for Al Arabi in the Qatar Stars League could not hide his joy for the youngster saying the transfer encourages other young players, who are now in the Kenya Premier League to follow his steps and work hard.
“It’s a very good, positive thing for Kenyan football, I’m so happy for him. It shows that we have the potential to produce these kind of players. He’s been really impressive for the national team in the recent fixtures, I really hope we can produce more such players,” said Olunga as quoted by Flashscore.
“I wish him the best in Austria. I know he has the quality to be one of the top strikers produced in our country. This move also encourages other young players who are now in the Kenya Premier League to follow his steps and work hard.”
Meanwhile, with the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set for December in Morocco, Olunga was asked why Kenya’s name was missing from the participating teams.
“We started the competition well. But we played most of our games outside our country, because we didn’t have the proper CAF accredited stadiums. And lack of playing at home can really derail your performances,” he explained.
“Now, since the stadiums were inspected by CAF and we managed to play most of our recent home games, you can see the transition. We are generating good results. So, I believe going forward, with the team that is coming up, uh, we are going to produce positive results. And hopefully try to qualify for the next editions.”
Since joining Wolfsberger, Ogam has managed one appearance.
