Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has called on manager Ruben Amorim to consider starting Andre Onana for their Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon at Old Trafford on Thursday.
The 29-year-old Cameroon custodian was missing in action as the Red Devils suffered a humiliating 4-1 Premier League defeat against Newcastle United on Sunday. During the fixture at St. James’ Park, Altay Bayindir was preferred to start after Onana’s blunders in the 2-2 first leg draw against Lyon.
According to Brown, a five-time Premier League winner, Onana is more experienced than Bayindir and should be recalled for the return leg clash at Old Trafford.
“He's the more experienced keeper,” Brown told AOS in an exclusive interview as quoted by SABC Sports. ”Despite the errors in Lyon, he's had great games this season. He can put it right.
“It's a massive game. They know the season's on the line. They've got to take their chances. The standard at United is challenging for trophies. They're nowhere near that level, but this is their chance to show they can deliver.”
After the Newcastle game, Amorim was asked whether Onana could return to face Lyon and he responded: “Sometimes you need to let a player disconnect. Andre will be back in training, ready for the next one. The mental aspect is as important as the physical.”
