Top-flight football is set to return to the North West province as Orbit College secured promotion to the Betway Premiership on Wednesday afternoon, triumphing over Cape Town City FC with a 1-0 victory at a packed Olympia Stadium.
The result sends Cape Town City down to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
In a thrilling encounter, Cape Town City, despite their top-flight experience, struggled to breach the Orbit College defence.
While the Citizens dictated early proceedings, goalkeeper Sekhoane Moerane remained untroubled by their initial efforts. Haashim Domingo's long-range strike in the 21st minute and Amadou Soukouna's shot ten minutes later were both comfortably gathered by Moerane.
Orbit College, affectionately known as 'The Mswenko Boys', gradually found their footing. Although decision-making in the attacking third proved challenging at times, Gomolemo Khonto had opportunities, including a deflected shot and another that sailed over the bar, before the teams headed into halftime goalless.
The deadlock was broken just two minutes into the second half when Letsie Koapeng capitalised on a defensive lapse from City, beating Darren Keet at his near post to give Orbit College a crucial 1-0 lead.
Despite relentless pressure from Cape Town City as time dwindled, Orbit College held firm. Domingo had another chance in the 62nd minute, but his effort went over the crossbar. Orbit College's resolute defence ensured they maintained their slim lead, sparking jubilant celebrations for their promotion to South Africa's top flight.
This pivotal win follows Orbit College's recent 1-0 victory over Casric Stars at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium last Saturday, a result that positioned them strongly in the playoff mini-league.
Finishing as runners-up in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, Orbit College earned their place in the playoffs, while Cape Town City's 15th-place finish in the Premiership last season necessitated their battle for survival.
