Stadium crisis forces Orbit College to move Chiefs clash

In a turn of events for North West football fans, Orbit College FC has been forced to move their high-profile home fixture against Kaizer Chiefs away from Rustenburg.

The match, originally set for early April, will now take place over 1,100km away at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha.

The relocation comes after ongoing safety and structural concerns at Olympia Park. The venue recently drew heavy criticism during a fixture involving Mamelodi Sundowns, with officials citing poor pitch conditions and a capacity far too limited to host a club of Amakhosi’s stature.

While the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace was initially touted as the most logical alternative in the North West, the PSL has ultimately opted for the 2010 World Cup venue in the Eastern Cape. For Kaizer Chiefs, what should have been a short bus ride now becomes a massive cross-country trek for the clash on April 6.

The move is expected to be a financial boon for the Gqeberha region, as the “Chiefs effect” historically guarantees a sell-out crowd at the 46,000-seater Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Chiefs’ Momentum Boost

The 12-day FIFA international break comes at a perfect time for the Soweto giants. After snapping a frustrating four-match winless streak with back-to-back victories over Durban City FC (1-0) and Magesi FC (2-0), Chiefs have climbed to fourth place in the standings.

The hiatus allows key personnel to return to full fitness as the race for a CAF interclub spot intensifies.

Etiosa Ighodaro: The striker is using the break to recover from a nagging injury. Sibongiseni Mthethwa: The midfield anchor is working on regaining match sharpness following a recent layoff.

The Soweto giants’ fans will be hoping their coach returns with fresh tactical insights as they prepare for the long journey to the Windy City to face a determined Orbit College side.
