Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou and five members of his technical staff were seriously injured in a road traffic incident on Sunday night, the club has confirmed.
The accident occurred on the R21 highway as the team bus was returning from Gqeberha, following their 3–0 victory over Chippa United in the Betway Premiership on Sunday.
According to the club’s statement, Ouaddou and several staff members had gotten off the bus to assist people involved in an initial two-car collision when a third vehicle, a Nissan NP200, crashed into the scene, striking the group.
Ouaddou and the five staff members were immediately rushed to the hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention. The club has not provided specific details on the nature of their injuries, but has confirmed that the team is in close contact with the medical staff.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the club emphasised that its priority is the health and well-being of those affected. “The Club has made arrangements to ensure that the affected individuals and their families receive all the necessary support during this difficult time,” the statement read.
The Soweto giants have requested privacy for everyone involved as they focus on their recovery and have stated that further updates will be provided when appropriate.
