Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has said his side struggled to play in bad weather conditions in their 3-1 win over Richards Bay at King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
In a post-match interview with the South African Broadcasting Corporation, the Spaniard said despite the challenges, what only mattered was the victory in this Nedbank Cup round-of-32 contest.
“It was difficult to control the game in these circumstances. I am sorry for the players having to play in these conditions but it is what it is,” he said seemingly referring to harsh weather conditions.
“The best thing you can get in these conditions is the result and no injuries—we got both so [there is] happiness.”
Riveiro was also self-critical, saying he made some bad decisions especially in the second half.
“I didn't have my best second half as a coach. I should have done some things differently in order not to suffer…I was slow but the guys fought until the end for the result so that we can again play in the quarterfinals.”
Pirates won the game courtesy of Patrick Maswanganyi’s first-half brace and Thsegofatso Mabasa’s late strike whereas Yanelo Mbuthuma netted the hosts’ consolation goal.
In other games played on Saturday, Polokwane City and Mamelodi Sundowns beat The Bees FC 1-0 and Sibanye Golden Stars 5-2 respectively in other round-of-16 ties.
The action continued on Sunday evening with Kaizer Chiefs leading 2-0 against Free Agents FC with the second half still to play at this moment.
