Orlando Pirates have swiftly dismissed reports suggesting a R120 million offer from Dutch club PSV Eindhoven for their key player, Relebohile Mofokeng.
From their pre-season training camp in Spain, the Soweto giants issued a statement on Wednesday to address the widely reported bid.
Last season, Mofokeng proved to be a vital player for the Soweto giants. He played a crucial role in their MTN8 victory, their second-place finish in the Betway Premiership, a strong run to the CAF Champions League semifinals, and an appearance in the Nedbank Cup final.
Across all competitions, he featured in 49 games, contributing significantly with 12 goals and 15 assists.
The Bafana Bafana international has also previously been linked with moves to European football powerhouses such as Barcelona and Rangers, following a trial with English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Speculation surrounding Mofokeng’s potential departure intensified after Mohau Nkota recently completed his transfer to Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq. Reports suggested that Mofokeng would be the next to make a move, with claims that PSV had submitted an offer exceeding R100 million.
However, Pirates have vehemently denied these claims, branding the report as “false and irresponsible.”
In an official club statement, Bucs said: “Orlando Pirates Football Club has taken note of the article published by SoccerLaduma.com on Tuesday, 16 July 2025, titled: R120m For Mofokeng? How PSV’s Linked To Pirates Sensation. We wish to place it on record that no such offer has been received by the Club. The claims made in the article are not only false but also irresponsible and damaging.
“As a publication with a long-standing history in South African football, Soccer Laduma is expected to uphold the highest standards of journalism rooted in fact, accuracy, and responsibility. Unfortunately, in this instance, they have chosen sensationalism over truth.
“This type of reporting is not only misleading to the public but also serves as an unnecessary distraction aimed at unsettling both the player and the Club at a critical juncture in our preparations for the upcoming season. Orlando Pirates remains committed to the well-being of our players and will continue to act in their best interests. We call upon all media outlets to refrain from publishing unverified reports that seek to create instability for the sake of clicks.”
