Orlando Pirates secure Andre de Jong in major transfer coup

Orlando Pirates have officially opened their 2026 January transfer window with a high-profile addition, confirming the arrival of New Zealand international Andre de Jong from Stellenbosch FC.

The versatile forward becomes the Buccaneers’ first signing of the new year, arriving at Mayfair with a reputation as one of the most intelligent tactical players in the Betway Premiership. De Jongโ€™s move follows months of speculation after the Sea Robbers saw a Deadline Day move for the attacker blocked in September when the Winelands club was unable to secure a suitable replacement.

In a brief statement on Monday, Pirates said: “A new Buccaneer joins the ship. Orlando Pirates is pleased to announce the signing of Andre de Jong. Welcome, Andre.”

A Pillar of the Winelands Era: Andre de Jong

De Jong departs Stellenbosch after a highly successful stint that saw him transform into a centrepiece of the club’s offensive unit. Since joining from Royal AM in early 2023, the 29-year-old clocked over 100 appearances for the club, contributing 19 goals and 11 assists across all competitions.

His move also marks a significant period of transition for Stellenbosch. De Jong was a favourite under long-serving coach Steve Barker, who recently ended his nearly decade-long stay in the Western Cape to join Tanzanian giants Simba SC. With Barkerโ€™s departure and Gavin Hunt recently taking the reins, the sale of De Jong signals the start of a new chapter for the Winelands side.
