Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has revealed his team’s readiness to win his last Betway Premiership Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

The derby will come at a crucial moment in the top-flight, with both teams aiming for a strong finish in the league. However, for Riveiro, the match will hold added emotional weight. It will be his final league Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium before the two sides meet again in the domestic Nedbank Cup final on May 10.

Speaking during the pre-match press conference, Riveiro reflected on the significance of the Derby and the impact South African football has had on his life.

“Personally, it has changed my life. I am impressed with the league- not only my players. It’s nice to have such talented players. I tell them all the time that they make me happy having to manage such talent,” explained Riveiro.

“We are looking for victory. That’s important for us and the fans. We need to get back on track. We understand the responsibility — we are a winning team. This is my last derby at FNB. It’s a special place — not only for me but for the players as well.”

The Buccaneers will head into the vital fixture at the back of two devastating defeats. First, Pirates got knocked out of the CAF Champions League after losing 3-2 against Pyramids of Egypt in the semi-final stage of the inter-club competition.

Pirates had secured a 0-0 draw from the first leg at FNB Stadium but went ahead to suffer a 3-2 defeat and exit the stage on a 3-2 aggregate scoreline. On returning to league action, Pirates’ hopes of catching up with runway league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns suffered a blow after losing 1-0 against Sekhukhune United at Orlando Pirates Stadium.

Having claimed a 1-0 victory in the first leg earlier this season, the Buccaneers will be looking to complete the double over their rivals and keep pace with Sundowns at the summit.
