Orlando Pirates are now unbeaten in five consecutive games after a dominant 3-0 victory at Chippa United on Sunday in South Africa’s Betway Premiership.
Once Patrick Maswanganyi opened the scoring in the 10th minute from Evidence Makgopa’s clever lay off, the Bucs were off and running and did not look back. Deon Hotto doubled the lead close to halftime and substitute Tshepang Moremi put the result well beyond doubt soon after coming on in the second half.
After a difficult start to the campaign under new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, the Sea Robbers are finding their form in the league courtesy of success in the MTN 8 cup. Pirates advanced to the final last weekend with a penalty kick shootout victory over Mamelodi Sundowns and have gone on to take care of business in league play with two straight victories in the last five days.
In the other game on Sunday, Marumo Gallants and Polokwane City played to a 1-1 draw. Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune United were among the notable winners over the weekend with Sekhukhune and Chiefs remaining tied atop the table with thirteen points through five games. Reigning champions Sundowns are two points back and Pirates are four points back in fifth place.
The league will take a break for the upcoming FIFA window. Action resumes on September 14 when Sundowns host Magesi FC. Before that, Pirates will face Stellenbosch FC in the MTN 8 final on September 13 at the Mbombela Stadium.
