Osimhen says Beşiktaş win confidence boost ahead of Liverpool test

Nigeria forward Victor Osimhen has claimed Galatasaray’s slim 1-0 Turkish Super Lig victory Beşiktaş will boost their confidence heading into their Champions League fixture against Liverpool on Tuesday.

The Turkish giants will host the Premier League outfit at RAMS Park in the first leg of the Round of 16 fixture, before the two sides meet at Anfield in the return leg on Wednesday, March 18.

Before the Liverpool fixture, Osimhen played a key role after he scored the only goal as Galatasaray defeated Besiktas 1-0 in a fiercely contested Istanbul derby on Saturday.

Playing against his teammates in the Super Eagles and captain Wilfred Ndidi, Osimhen fired home a first-half header which secured the win to stretch their advantage at the top to seven points.

‘We fought aggressively until the end’

“We knew it wouldn’t be easy. We expected to play against a tough opponent in front of thousands of fans. We had momentum in the match. We scored a goal. We struggled after the red card,” Osimhen told Galatasaray website after the derby.

“That’s normal when you’re playing against a quality opponent. I congratulate my teammates for both their endurance and strength. We fought very aggressively until the very end. In that respect, I’m very happy with this victory.”

Osimhen added: “Yes, of course, first and foremost we need to follow our coach’s instructions. Besides that, there were also players among my teammates who excited and motivated me.

“After the goal, they called me back to defense. And as I’ve always said, I love this club very much and we are fighting to make our dreams come true. I am proud of our team.

“We show great unity in both our away and home games. For this, we need to take it one game at a time and fight for each other.”

‘We need to keep our feet on the ground’

“On their Champions League fixture against Liverpool, Osimhen said: “A win would of course give us extra support and confidence; however, we need to keep our feet on the ground.

“Liverpool are a very big and very ambitious team. Playing at home could be an advantage for us. If we play a better game in front of our fans, taking lessons from this match, I believe we can get a good result, even if it won’t be easy.”

Osimhen concluded: “Every match in the Champions League is already very difficult. We will do our best to perform well there and achieve good results in front of our fans.”

Across all competitions this season, Osimhen has recorded 18 goals and six assists in 26 appearances for the Istanbul giants.
