Nigeria forward Victor Osimhen has promised to fight for the top scorer award in the Champions League after he scored a hat-trick to help Galatasaray defeat Ajax 3-0 at Johan Cruyff Arena on Wednesday.
Osimhen secured top spot in the Champions League scorers’ chart with six goals in four matches. The Super Eagle had scored another two goals as the Turkish Super Lig side saw off FK Bodø/Glimt 3-1 on October 22.
Speaking after the Ajax game, Osimhen said as quoted by the club’s official website: “Of course, I think I have the quality to do that, but I do it with the support of my teammates.
“They love giving me the ball like I did today (Wednesday). It’s a team effort, and I believe that with my teammates and their support, it’s definitely a possibility. I will fight for it.”
The Super Eagles star added, “Overall, I think we deserved it. We knew what the opponent was going to do. We were well prepared mentally and psychologically.
“I’m very happy with the goals, of course, but I also want to thank all my teammates. We will continue to build on this momentum. I believe we will be very happy at the end of the Champions League campaign, and we will continue to work towards that goal.”
The victory was Galatasaray’s third win of the league phase and put them in ninth position on the 36-team table with nine points from three matches.
Galatasaray will return to domestic league play on Sunday away at Kocaelispor. Their next Champions League match will be on November 25 at home against Belgian club Royal Union Saint-Gilloise.
