Otto Addo: Ghana coach targets improved display against Germany

Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations hit a snag after they were battered 5-1 against Austria at the Ernst Happel Stadium last Friday.

The Black Stars return on Monday to face European powerhouse Germany in their second friendly in Stuttgart, a game head coach Otto Addo is looking to turn things around.

Speaking ahead of the game in Stuttgart, Addo admitted the performance against Austria was a major setback but said the team has used the time to reflect and assess what went wrong.

Ghana will next play Germany in Stuttgart

“We have had a lot to analyse since Saturday’s defeat, which was a big blow for us in our preparation.

“We were optimistic to have a good game, but after the first half and two unnecessary goals, we fell apart,” he said.

“We have had a lot to talk through and analyse. Even though we will have very strong opponents, we are very optimistic that we can handle the situation.”

Otto Addo has admitted his job is “always under threat” regardless of the situation.

The 50-year-old’s uninspiring performances with the Black Stars was compounded after the 5-1 loss against Austria.

He said: “Even when we qualified for the World Cup, people were calling for me to step down. So, [my job] is always under threat, but I don’t really care.

“For me, the most important thing is that I prepare my best for the team to the best,” he added.

The Austria and Germany friendlies form part of Ghana’s build-up to the 2026 World Cup, where they will face Panama, Croatia and England in Group L.
